Parliamentary Career: Member, (1)Fifth Gujarat Legislative Assembly, 1975-80,(2) Seventh Gujarat Legislative Assembly,1985-90, (3) Eighth Gujarat Legislative Assembly,1990-95. Leader of the Gujarat Legislature Bharatiya Janata Party, 1985- 90, and its deputy Leader, 1990-95. Member of various Committees of the  Gujarat Legislative Assembly and was Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee for two years and member   of the Committee on Public Undertakings for a period of five years continuously.  Minister for Industries, Mines, Cottage Industries, Printing and Stationery from 12th March to 26th October 1990 in the Government of Gujarat. He was Minister for Finance, Industries and Mines and Environment, Law and Judiciary and parliamentary Affairs in the Government of Gujarat from 19th March 1995 to 21st October 1995. Chief Minister of Gujarat State since 21st October 1995 and holds portfolios of General Administration, Planning. Home (Except Jails), Industrial and Energy Policy, Information and Broadcasting, Ports and Petrochemicals. He was a Chief Minister of Gujarat State from 21st October 1995 to          19, september,1996.

Activities: Civil Judge and Judicial Megistrate (First class), 1967-69.          Ex- Treasurer, Gujarat Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party. Member, (1) Bharatiya Janata Party Parliamentary Board (Gujarat Unit), (2) National Council, Bharatiya Janata party. He was leader of Bharatiya Janata party in Mandvi Municipality.  trustee of many social institutions.

Hobby: Poems, reading, music, travelling.

Travels Abroad: European countries, America, West Indies, Israel, Egypt and Gulf countries. Participated as the delegate of Gujarat in the 35th C.P.Conference held in Barbados in 1989 and in the 39th C.P. Conference held in Cyprus in 1993.
